When iOS 7 is released next week, retailers and other large indoor spaces are going to be able to use a technology called iBeacon to send data over short distances to iPhones. Here’s how it will work. At WWDC in June, Apple quietly announced iBeacon, one of the more prominent features of iOS 7. Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering, mentioned nothing about about it in the keynote, and Apple hasn’t provided any details about it; it was only seen on one slide in the WWDC keynote.
Wind Mobile may not sell Apple Inc.’s iPhone in its stores, but the start-up carrier is supporting more than 2,500 of the iconic devices on its network. Executives say a growing number of Wind’s 650,000 wireless subscribers are turning to other sources to buy unlocked versions of the latest iPhone that work on the AWS (Advanced Wireless Spectrum) frequencies available on the small carrier’s network.
Apple headquarters, located at 1 Infinite Loop in Cupertino, Calif., is one of the most exclusive buildings in the world. It’s the home of many of today’s greatest innovations, including the iPhone, iPod, iPad, and Mac computers. The sprawling six-building campus, which occupies 32 acres near Interstate 280, is designed to look like a perfect infinite loop, reflecting the design tastes of the company’s founders.
The last numbers for Apple’s device sales came in June, when it had announced 600M devices total. Those figures are likely to get a boost this quarter when Apple unleashes two new models of iPhone on the market. Apple’s sales have increasingly become cyclical, tied to the holiday release season. This has caused some depression of its stock over the last year and placed increasing pressure on the impacts that these fall events have on its iOS
The most widely noted feature of the new phone was its fingerprint scanner. For now, the utility of the scanner is limited. It can be used only to allow users to bypass the need for a password when they want to unlock their phones or buy things from iTunes. This is kind of neat, and it could prove to be a modest benefit for Apple in the corporate market, in which users often have to enter long passwords to unlock their phones.
Google has acquired the mobile startup Bump. A source close to the transaction said it was worth at least $30 million, and perhaps as much as $60 million. Bump had raised about $20 million from backers including Sequoia Capital and Andreessen Horowitz, so it was “not a home run,” the source admitted.

New iPhone launches used to scare wireless carriers because subsidies took a big chunk out of their margins, but the launch of Apple Inc.’s two new smartphones may mark a shift in this dynamic.
Apple has begun evaluating a plan to offer iPhones with screens ranging from 4.8 inches to as high as 6 inches, people familiar with the matter say. That would be a sizable leap from the 4-inch screen of the iPhone 5 released last year, and, at the upper end, would be one of the largest on the market.
Watch the official Apple iPhone 5s video. Your fingerprint is the perfect password. You always have it with you. And no two are exactly alike. So it made sense to create a simple, seamless way to use it as a password.
